Now with reCAPTCHA

As you may or may not know this blog is under what appears to be constant attack from spam comments. Some get caught by Akismet, others don't.

That's why I'm trying a plugin, WP-reCAPTCHA, let's all hope it works :-)

Introducing: Math

Somehow a ton of spam comments made their way past Akismet, making me hate freakin' spammers even more!

So, as a result of this, you now have to answer a simple math question, whenever you want to leave a comment. I hope this is not a problem, if it really pisses you off, drop me a line ;-)

PS: I chose the Challenge plugin for WordPress.

Update:
Actually, the nice folks at WordPress have created a page with various antispam tools:

Take 100 blogs in English, and 64 of them are spam blogs

Okay, so I knew that a lot of the blogs in the blogosphere are spam blogs, but I hadn't imagined that the number is 64 percent of all blogs in English!

This is the conclusion in a count of the pings done by the ebiquity research group at University of Maryland:

53% of all pings is spam, 64% of all pings from blogs in English is spam

How to delete the indelible MySpace spam comment

After a tip from a friend I found this Danish forum thread on how to delete the spam comment on MySpace, that apparently couldn't be deleted, since it embedded the text following the comment in a text field.

Well, here's the solution:

Safe Mode –> Comments –> "Delete"

That does it :D

Argh: MySpace attacked, cracked and spammed - once again!

A friend of mine has had her MySpace password cracked, and now some pimpled guys are having fun spreading spam comments, that can't be deleted.

This is possible because MySpace has a stupid layout, where the delete link for each comment is placed AFTER the comment, therefore it's in the code, that the comment is embedding in a textbox, and you can't execute the JavaScript that should delete the comment from the address bar… very nice :-(

Solution: If MySpace would just place the delete link BEFORE the post or make it impossible to create text fields within comments — why would you want to do that anyway?

<Update>
I just found some interesting posts about this MySpace scam:

The comment is pointing to KDJDK.INFO, and if you do a whois lookup at Allwhois.com you get the result below.

Correction: (Not) Yet another spammer that I hate

Okay, it seems I was a bit too fast labeling GGfree as a ruthless spamming organization based in/on Bahamas :-)

Seems that it's a Danish company based in the Caribbean, I guess that the diffent company names ('GGfree' and 'Elisabeth Victoria Corporation') is what made me think that I was dealing with spammers…

Below is the original post, which (as it turns out) is not entirely true :-)

My apologies.

* * * * * *

Just got an e-mail from "ggfree.dk" saying that they have a competition where I can win an iPod 80 GB.

I almost considered participating in the contest, but then I did a whois-lookup:

(It's in Danish, but you get the picture)

Domænenavn: ggfree.dk
DNS: ggfree.dk
Registreret: 2005-03-16
Status: Aktivt

Registrant:
Bruger-id: EVC12-DK
Navn: Elisabeth Victoria Corporation
Adresse: 55 Frederick Street
Adresse: P.O. Box CB 13039
Postnr. & by: 13039 Nassau
Land: Bahamas
Telefon: +5 555555555

Fuldmægtig:
Bruger-id: EVC13-DK
Navn: Elisabeth Victoria Corporation
Att.: Domain Administrator
Adresse: 55 Frederick Street
Adresse: P.O. Box CB 13039
Postnr. & by: 13039 Nassau
Land: Bahamas
Telefon: +5 555555555

Navneservere:
dns31.register.com RC1928-DK
dns32.register.com RC1928-DK

Nassau, Bahamas? Doesn't sound very reliable…

Argh! It's raining spam!

Almost all of my blogs, except this one which uses Akismet, is being flooded with spam at the moment!

It's been going on for some minutes now, and they just keep on coming.

Good thing I always leave the "Comment author must have a previously approved comment" setting on in Wordpress…

Fighting spam - the Akismet way!

I finally got myself together and activated the Akismet plugin, that comes included with Wordpress 2.x. Others can download it here, but note this: you must have Wordpress 2.0 for this plugin to work.

The story
In the past weeks, I've been getting more and more spam about buying valium and all sorts of drugs. Often these are very link heavy posts, where the first line reads "Great site" or "Nice job, love your site" - like that's gonna make you accept the comment? I think not.

The solution
So a colleague of mine suggested that I tried the plugin. So I did.

The recipe
After you've downloaded and installed the plugin, unless it came with your Wordpress installation, to use the Akismet spam fighting plugin is a Wordpress API key, which you can obtain by creating you own Wordpress.com account, which is done in a snap.

The result
You'll now have a fully powered plugin, that takes out the trash for you. It analyzes the comments on your blog and sorts the spammy ones away into oblivion, you can however still go through the list of blocked comments and make sure, that I doesn't go false-positive on you :-)

The description
According to Akismet itself, here's what it does:

When a new comment, trackback, or pingback comes to your blog it is submitted to the Akismet web service which runs hundreds of tests on the comment and returns a thumbs up or thumbs down

Sounds like a keeper…
