Gmail is down

Apparently Gmail is suffering from server errors:

We’re sorry, but your Gmail account is currently experiencing errors. You won’t be able to use your account while these errors last, but don’t worry, your account data and messages are safe. Our engineers are working to resolve this issue.

Please try accessing your account again in a few minutes.

Twitter is flooding with angry Gmail users. Google sure has some explaining to do.

New Better Gmail extension for new Gmail

As a Gmail user who uses Gmail a lot, I also use a Firefox extension entitled "Better Gmail".

But as Google has started upgrading all Gmail accounts to a new and improved Gmail a new version of the Better Gmail extension is needed.

The aptly named "Better Gmail 2" is available at the Lifehacker site.

The new Better Gmail 2 extension lacks some of the features of its predecessor — I'm missing the Airwaves skin, for instance — but it's still at version 0.1, so they'll probably resurface in later versions.

In other news: All Gmail users now have IMAP access.

Google adds more space to Gmail — turning 3 GB

Today when I logged into Gmail, I noticed that I had some more space available than usually:

You are currently using 639 MB (21%) of your 3044 MB.

A quick look at the official Gmail blog and yes:

That said, a few of you are using Gmail so much that you're running out of space, so to make good on our promise, today we're announcing we are speeding up our counter and giving out more free storage.

Storage boosts are also on the way for Google Apps.

As Borat would put it: Very nice!

Update 1 @ 12:20
Just stumbled upon my post "5 GB of storage at Hotmail. As it now turns out, Google did not do nothing :-)

Oh, how nice: Another PayPal scam

Just got an email from PayPal (allegedly) saying that my account will be closed, unless I click a link in the email to active my account.

This email has scam written all over it. First of all, I doubt that PayPal would ever send out an email like that. Second, the email wasn't even send to me but "mactipper@gmail.com".

Anyhow, here's the text from the email:

PayPal

Information Regarding Your account:

Dear PayPal Member!

Attention! Your PayPal account has been violated!

Someone with ip address 49.225.126.87 tried to access your personal account!

Please click the link below and enter your account information to confirm that you are not currently away.

You have 3 days to confirm account information or your account will be locked.

Click here to activate your account

Thank you for using PayPal!
The PayPal Team

Usually you can spot these scams from the bad grammar. This one's is in the better half but still:

You have 3 days to confirm account information or your account will be locked.

Normally you'd write "your" between "confirm" and "account information".

Soooooo, long story short: Don't click the link, if you get an email like that :-)

Yahoo takes a leap forward: Buys e-mail company

CNET News reports that Yahoo buys e-mail software firm Zimbra:

Zimbra offers branded e-mail with calendar and mobile features as well as the ability to work offline. The company has more than 200 educational, business and ISP partners, including Comcast, that offer branded e-mail service to roughly 9 million subscribers.

What differentiates Zimbra are the "Zimlet," Web service mashups that offer richer functionality in e-mail. For instance, people can simply mouse over airline flight information in an e-mail to check on flight status. Users are also able to track FedEx deliveries and get maps, stocks and other information in e-mail too.

GigaOM also has a post on this.

Looks like there's a great deal of stuff happening in the field of browser based email applications. Again. Nice. Very nice.

5 GB of storage at Hotmail

I have a Hotmail account that I don't use a lot, since I'm hopelessly in love with Gmail, among other things because of the magnificent search.

Nevertheless, I just got a mail from Hotmail telling me, that my account has been upgraded.

Among other things, my account is now an impressing 5 gigabytes — a bit more than the 2.9 that Gmail is currently offering.

It's going to be a little bit interesting to see what's going to happen here. Yahoo has unlimited space and Hotmail is now providing 5 gigs. No way, that Google will do nothing ;-)

That's my view…

I hate e-mail receipts

Why is it that some people have the urge to check whether or not the recipient(s) of the e-mails they send opens the e-mails?

I'm referring to the e-mail receipts, which notifies the sender as soon as the recipient opens the e-mail.

I hate those receipts. Grrrrr. First of all they don't tell the sender if the recipient actually reads the e-mail or just discards it. Plus sometimes when I read an e-mail I don't post my reply until later. Maybe because I haven't got time for a reply when I'm reading the e-mail or maybe I have to check up on some things before replying.

So why do we have e-mail receipts at all?

Goodbye, e-mail applications

From this day forward, I'm no longer using e-mail applications such as Outlook and Thunderbird.

The reason: Gmail now supports fetching e-mail from others accounts using POP3.

So I figured that I might as well go 100 percent online with my e-mailing stuff :-)

To stay updated on incoming e-mails I'm currently using ePrompter. But it would be better, if there were some online equivalent to ePrompter. Anyone heard of anything like this?

I could of course use the RSS from Gmail and smack it into Bloglines but I don't want my e-mail updates mixed up with my blog and feed updates.
