Denmark is an "extensive surveillance society"
Jan 2nd, 2008 @ 23:36My friend Jeppe just showed me a report on "Leading surveillance societies in the EU and the World 2007", where Denmark, where I live, is listed under "extensive surveillance societies".
Read the report and judge for yourself. Quite a scary bit of reading, if you ask me…

Having lived in the UK and now Denmark, the surveillance society in Denmark does not seem overpowering. The id cards are necessary for the public services and I dont feel offended by it. In the UK I was very much against their implimentation due to the fact that there was no control and often major government agencies, banks and insurance companies would misplace files or leak loads of data to the public. It was like living in a monkey house and waiting to see which monkey would do the next stupid thing.
UK Traffic cameras are everywhere - I mean everywhere - you can drive down any major road without you being on camera. In Denmark the cameras are not as prevalent and they are also advertised. In the UK, there are signs saying speed camera ahead and they are painted bright yellow. In Denmark, no warning signs and cameras are grey and blend in with other landmarks. Don't know if that is better or worse - I drive within the speed limits and dont feel as threatened as I did in the UK. There I felt that any minor driving error could cost me a ticket. Two tickets in 6 years in Britain - both minor offences caught by a speed camera. I think if you live in Denmark, you should feel safer with the surveillance they have in place and not threatened as you do in the UK. Denmark has a long way to go before they become like Britain and Britain is not slowing down - they are planning on implementing black boxes in cars to track your road usage, have talked about putting chips in felons and undesirables, biometric id cards, etc. Big Brother is here and it is only going to get worse everywhere unless the people stand up for their freedoms and say enough is enough.
